Tampa, Fl (11-05-05) Ohio racer Greg Wilson made the long tow down
Interstate 75 pay off as he dominated the action in the 35-lap O’Reilly
United Sprint Car Series (USCS) Fall Brawl at East Bay Raceway Park.
Wilson snatched the lead from fellow Ohioan Brock Mayes early on and
forced the rest of the field into a game of chase. It was a game they
could not win.
Wilson gained the outside front row starting spot by finishing second to
Mayes in the dash event, which set the first six starting spots. Mayes
provided the first threat, but soon had to deal with challenges on his
position. Wilson moved out and encountered lapped traffic in the 22-car
field by lap 5. Kenny Adams shot past Mayes for second, but a caution
wiped out that pass as Bob Auld spun in turn four. On the restart, Adams
found himself gunned down by Friday night winner Sport Allen who charged
by Mayes as well to gain second. The best action settled outside the top
five as 2004 Fall Brawl champion Greg Leonard, and teenagers Matt
Tiffany and Tyler Godwin swapped spots back and forth.
The red flag flew on lap 17 as Arkansas racer Marshall Skinner tumbled
in the first turn while running in the top five. He was unhurt, but his
night ended in the incident which also affected Stephen Darvalics and
Leonard. The red allowed crew members to refuel the cars for the
remainder of the event. On the restart, Brian Maddox spun, collecting
Terry Gray. With the restart, Tyler Godwin battled Jason Sides for
position. Ahead of them, Adams finally worked past Mayes and Godwin
followed suit on the same lap. Mayes rallied back and took the position
from Godwin until Bubba Clem was spun into the infield on lap 27.
Sides slipped past Godwin at the drop of the restart green and the field
kept pace. After the white flag flew, Adams spun on the backstretch,
which dropped him from third to 11th. Wilson prevailed with Allen in tow
as both mastered lapped traffic to the end. Mayes regained third with
the Adams spin. Sides took fourth and Godwin rounded out the top five.
O’Reilly USCS heat wins were taken by Paulie Milum, Daryl Smith, and
Greg Leonard. Danny Martin Jr. topped the B main racers.
With the running of the event, Adams clinched the 2005 O’Reilly USCS
season championship.
Jim Coursen and Josh Peacock put on a spirited battle in the Outlaw 4
main, won by Coursen. The eventual winner took the lead on lap three but
could only keep it for a pair of laps. Peacock rallied back for the top
spot on lap 5, but his reign was shorter, lasting less than a lap. The
field ran 12 laps before the first caution for a simple spin, which
bunched the pack together. Coursen powered out on the restart and led
the field to the checkered flag on lap 20. Peacock retained second.
Steve Miller ran a steady third, ahead of Jeff Conyers and point leader
Chad Rose.
Devin Dixon moved to the top of the race track in the late stages of the
Gagel’s Open Wheel Modified main event and it proved to be the winning
move. After the first start was called back, the field went to town in
the 20-lap main. Billy Boyd Jr. was leading until he was caught up in a
spin with Wayne Hammond. The incident gave the lead to Scotty Williams
with Rusty Dixon advancing to second. Williams managed to keep Dixon and
the rest of the field at bay, but there were some hard chargers
beginning to make a move. Buzzie Reutimann made a masterful pass to move
from fifth to third while Jeff Mathews got into the thick of things by
getting past Reutimann and Rusty Dixon shortly after. The move put
Mathews in second. Reutimann got around Mathews, then made contact with
Williams and the pair spun, leaving Mathews in command. On a lap 13
restart, Mathews was in control until the third turn when the car slowed
with mechanical woes. Mathews’ demise brought a new leader as Perry
Brown moved into control. Brown held the lead until Devin Dixon charged
to the outside four laps later. Devin Dixon had tried every angle on the
low side and decided to make his move in turns one and two. He gained
the spot by the backstretch and motored away from the field. He took the
checkered with a comfortable margin, but second running Brown had his
hands full with a charging David Schmauss, who claimed third. Fourth
went to Roger Crouse with Jamie Burrows crossing in fifth.
Buck Skinner rolled to his seventh win of the 4 Cylinder Bomber class,
tying him with D.B. Hogwaler for most wins in the class. Hogwaler had a
rough night as he was collected after a turn four spin, bringing heavy
damage to his machine. The night was not a complete loss for Hogwaler
Racing as W.B. Hogwaler finished second. Dan Bliss notched another top
five with a third place run.
The Florida Mini Sprint Association brought a field of 18. Heats were
won by Eddie Moss Jr. and T.J. Raymond. Jesse Teed prevailed in the main
event, taking the lead from Paul Gottschalk on the second lap of the 15
scheduled circuits. Gottschalk kept second with new 2005 season champion
John Craddock moving through for third. Russ Heider and Greg Skyta
rounded out the top five.
The schedule moves on with Late Models, Limited Late Models, Limited
Sprints, Street Stocks, Outlaw 4s, 4 Cylinder Bombers and Gunslinger
Trucks on the agenda on Nov. 12. Racing action starts at 6:30 p.m.
