| Allen Tops USCS Friday Main at East Bay |
By Larry Jewett
Tampa, Fl (11-4-05) Traveling Sprint racers know they are in for a fight
when they make the tow to east Bay Raceway Park, the scene of the United
Sprint Car Series (USCS) Fall Brawl. Round one was contested on Friday
night and East Bay’s local contingent scored the TKO.
Sport Allen vaulted past young Matt Tiffany with five laps remaining to
win the 25-lap Friday main. Allen made his move on fellow Floridian
Tiffany as the duo headed into lapped traffic.
Allen started the night by posting the fastest qualifying time among the
strong competition. He took to the track late in the qualifying session,
shortly after Kenny Adams knocked Jason Sides from the honor. Allen’s
quick time was a 13.504 with USCS point leader Adams clocked at 13.534.
Former USCS multi-champion Terry Gray opened the competition with a win
in the Air Flow Research Power Dash. Heat races were won by Danny “The
Hammer” Martin Jr., Tyler Godwin, Greg Leonard, and Danny Curry. Adams
finished fifth in his heat, relegating him to the B main. In that last
chance race, Adams took the lead from Danny Jones by the third lap and
posted the win. The top five drivers advanced, including Tim Holston,
Sam Hafertepe Jr., R.J. Johnson, and Bubba “The Love Sponge” Clem.
The 25-lap A-main got off to a shaky start when two cars collided on the
backstretch, catching Martin the process. Martin’s ride flipped in the
infield for the first red. With just a few laps complete, Curry slapped
the turn three wall and took a tumble bringing another red. The race
would stay green from that restart t lap 22 when Godwin experienced some
mechanical issues. During the racing, Matt Tiffany jumped into the lead
and tried to run from the rest of the field. His first challenger was
Ohioan Brock Mayes, but Mayes soon had his hands full with an advancing
Sport Allen. Tiffany had started to work traffic when Allen bypassed
Mayes. Tennessee racers Jason Sides and Terry Gray had a serious battle
for the top five spots until Sides pulled away into fourth. Greg Wilson
hunted down Gray, then Sides and set sail for the lead pack. He passed
Mayes for third on the white flag lap, but couldn’t catch the rest of
the pack. Allen crossed ahead of Tiffany and Wilson. Mayes held on for
fourth while Adams nipped Sides at the line for fifth. Adams had started
17th in the 22-car field.
Street Stocks and Limited Sprints represented the East Bay local classes
for Friday night racing. A field of 23 Street Stocks was reduced by 2
when the feature rolled around. At the start of the 15-lap main,
polesitter Matthew Grissom assumed command at the start. Tim Spencer
slipped past Steve Burch to gain second before caution waved on lap 3.
On the restart, Austin Sanders brought his car to the topside, bypassing
two racers in one lap and finding himself third. He used the outside
line to ease past Spencer before a caution waved. With his choice of
line, Sanders went to the high side and the strategy nearly failed him
as Mac Kersey and Steven Johnson picked up the pace, making it three
wide on occasion. Sanders pulled away to let others fight for position.
Johnson found himself defending the spot from an advancing Paul Gibbs.
Grissom held the lead until lap 13 when sanders made his move. He passed
the leader and the pass stuck as the caution waved on the next lap. The
restart was a green and white affairs and Sanders came home a winner in
his fifth main of the season. Grissom kept second while Gibbs was able
to snag third. Kersey rallied for fourth, ahead of Johnson. Kersey and
Johnson won the preliminaries.
Limited Sprint racers had 18 cars on the pace lap for the 20-lap
feature. Bryan Eckley eased out front at the drop of the green. Paulie
Milum took second, leaving Rich Alexander to slip past Mike Steinruck
for third. Steinruck spun, allowing Greg Leonard to advance. Milum went
to the outside on lap 7 to grab the lead, but the pass didn’t count due
to a spin. Milum went for the lead on lap 9 and took it with Leonard
using the same move a lap later to grab second. Deeper in the field, Tim
George, Frank Beck III, and Donnie Maxwell were among those looking to
charge into contention. George snagged third with six laps to go, but
Leonard and Milum had no desire to make their two-car war a three-car
skirmish. Milum led Leonard by the line with George claiming third. Beck
came to fourth while Eckley held on to claim fifth. Heat race winners
were Eckley and Alexander.
Night number 2 of the O’Reilly USCS Fall Brawl will be held Saturday,
Nov. 5. Joining the USCS cars will be the Gagel’s Auto Parts Open Wheel
Modifieds, Outlaw 4, Mini Sprints, and 4-cylinder Bombers. Racing action
starts at 6:30 p.m. Complete information is available at
