Feb. 2, 2012 – Tampa, FL. – The first night of the 36th Annual Winternationals kicked off tonight with the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Models Series with 53 cars qualifying for the A-Main event. It was Chris Cantrell picking up the fast time of the night from group one with a time of 15.865. That time put him on the pole for the first of four heat race events. In Group #2 it was Doug Horton picking up fast time, Group 3 went to Walker Arther and Group 4 went to Doug Watson.

Next up was the 2nd Annual World Street Stock Championship. Three heat races were ran with Ritchie Stephens, Donnie Reed and Brian Hansford all picking up the wins.
Then it was four heat races for the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series. Dennis “Rambo” Franklin won heat race number one, which put him on the pole for the A-Main event. Doug Horton won heat race number two and put him on the outside pole. David Earl Gentry and Jack Nosbisch, Jr. won heat races three and four respectively. Top four finishers in each heat event advanced to the A-Main.

Next up were two B-Mains taking the top three from each race. William Thomas and Austin Hubbard won their B-Mains. Shannon Lee and Mark Tice picked up the provisional.

It was time for the 25 lap A-Main for the Street Stocks. Twenty three cars started the feature and starting on the pole was last years $3,000 Feature Winner, Calvin Cook from Pace, FL. On the outside pole was Terry Jones. When the green flag waved, it was Cook taking the early lead. But on the next lap, Tim Powers drove his way past Cook on the outside taking over the top spot on lap one.

First caution came out on lap four when Billy Carlbert, Jr. and Ronnie Pope tangled on the front stretch. Both cars were unable to continue the race.
On the restart, Ritchie Stephens came charging from the fifth position to take over the second spot from Cook on lap nine. Cook came to a rest in turn one bringing out the second caution of the night when his left front broke ending his hopes for another feature win.

Several more cautions came out, but then on the restart on lap twelve, the field went to a single file restart. When it came to the halfway point, it was still Powers and Stephens battling lap after lap with Donnie Reed now taking over the third spot.

Caution came out once again with just three laps to go when Brian Hansford came to rest in turn two.

When the final green flag waved, it was still Powers and Stephens battling side by side for the last three laps. On the final lap, Powers seemed to go high in turn four, but kept it pointed straight and went on to win the A-Main event. Finishing second was Stephens followed by Eric Moon and Donnie Reed. Tim Gay finished in the fifth spot after starting in the sixteenth spot. Brian Morgan, Jeff Rodgers, Buck Woodhouse, Dennis Wilson and Thomas Burnside rounded out the top ten.

Then it was the final event of the night with a 40 lap A-Main Feature for the NeSmith Dirt Late Models Series. On the pole, it was Dennis “Rambo” Franklin and Doug Horton on the outside pole. Doug Horton took control when the green flag waved for the first nine laps when the first caution came out for Mark Tice as he spun in turn two. Two-time defending Late Model Track Champion Bryan Bernhardt, apparently had issues with his car and took it to the pits ending his night.

Caution came out on lap nine when Mavrick Varndore lost control and several cars tangled in turn two. Your top five were Doug Horton, Rambo Franklin, Jack Nosbisch, Jr., Chris Cantrell and Johnny Stokes.

On the restart, it was still Doug Horton showing his muscle as he continued to lead the field as he started pulling away from Franklin stretching his lead to over seven car lengths by lap eighteen. Caution came out for the fourth time when Tom Morrow spun out in turn four tightening up the field once again.
On lap twenty five, it was your leader Doug Horton blowing an engine in turn one handing over the lead to Dennis Franklin. Jack Nosbisch, Jr. was now in second with Devin Dixon in third.

The green flag waved on lap twenty eight once again. Jack Nosbisch, Jr. then takes the lead from Franklin on lap twenty nine. Caution came out once again on lap thirty one with William Thomas slowing in turn two.

On the final restart on lap thirty two, Nosbisch, Jr. continued to lead Franklin. Franklin tried lap after lap to pass Nosbisch, Jr. They were side by side with just three laps to go coming out of turn four. But when the checkered flag waved, it was Jack Nosbisch, Jr. picking up his third career win with Franklin second. Chris Cantrell, Austin Hubbard and Johnny Stokes rounded out the top five.

In Victory Lane, Nosbisch, Jr. said he was thankful they made the right choices.” I was able to put the car wherever I wanted “ he explained. “I heard his car get closer to me in the end and had to move down to protect my line.” Nosbisch, Jr. and Franklin both expressed they were pleased that they raced each other clean towards the end of the race.

Dec. 17th, 2011 –It was the final night of the 2011 Season as two Championships were left to decide and the final Late Model event of the year going to the Donnie Tanner Memorial Series race #4 paying $3,000 to win.

The first feature of the night went to the Outlaw 4’s. Jesse Brown held an eighteen point lead over second place Nick Hebrank. Hebrank started on the pole with Brown starting in the ninth spot. When the green flag dropped, Billy Howard shot to the front after starting in the fourth spot. Howard was leading when the second caution came out on lap four for debris. But it was also bad news for Brown as he took his car to the pits and never returned, but still held the points lead. The green flag resumed with Howard showing the way, with Chris Zimmerman making his way up to the second spot after lap six. On lap eight, it was Howard who had slowed on the front stretch ending his night as he went to the pits handing the lead over to Zimmerman. Zimmerman never looked back as he went on to win the feature event. Hebrank had to finish in the top two spots to win the Championship. With Zimmerman picking up the win, Stephen Hohlbaugh finished second with John Yates, Kyle Kruse and Hebrank finishing fifth. Jesse Brown won the Championship by just a mere five points. Howard and Yates won the heat races.

Next up was the Street Stocks. The Championship had already been decided with Jeff Rodgers becoming the Champion after just his second year of racing dirt. Bob Fleming and Garry Sheffield made up the front row. Sheffield took the early lead with Bryan Morgan right behind him. Morgan took over the lead on lap two, but a caution came out handing the lead back over to Sheffield. Morgan was second with defending Champion, Donnie Reed in third. On the restart Sheffield led the next two laps, but Reed took over the top spot on lap four. Reed went on to win his sixth feature of the season with Morgan second, Jim Baker third, Sheffield fourth and David Barwick, II rounding out the top five. Barwick, II and Reed won their heat races.

Next up was the Donnie Tanner Memorial for the Late Models. Dennis Williams, Phillip Cobb and Doug Horton won their heat races. Starting on the front row was Shane Hitt and Doug Horton. When the green flag dropped, it was Horton with the lead. Several laps went by and Phillip Cobb took over the top spot with Varnadore right behind him. Varnadore and Cobb were battling into turns three and four and lapped traffic was trying to get out of the way of the leaders. Cobb went low as Varnadore went high and took over the top spot and never looked back. Cobb appeared to have mechanical issues and fell out of the race with Mavrick Varnadore making his was up to second after starting in the twelfth spot. Wallace Peacock picked up third while Doug Horton went on to take fourth. Dennis Williams rounded out the top five. Devin Dixon went on to win the points picking up a check for $1,000 for the four race series with Mavrick Varnadore second, Travis third and Josh Peacock and Cobb rounding out the top five.

Next up was Motorstats.com 4 Cylinder Bombers. Joshua Comeau, Brett Calonge, and Andre Sheneman won their heats. For the feature event, it was Robert Kissam and Bubba Puyear on the front row. Kissam and Puyear battled for the lead, but it was Puyear taking over the top spot and didn’t look back as he went on to win the feature event. Comeau, Calonge, Richard Humfield and Sheneman rounded out the top five.

The final event of the night and the final Championship to be decided was the Dirt Daubers. The defending Champion Brett Phillips had just a narrow margin over Bill Dixon. Bill Dixon picked up the feature win, but Phillips finished second making him the third Champion to win back to back Championships for the 2011 Season. Late Models was won by Bryan Bernhardt and the Gagel’s Open Wheel Modifieds went to Austin Sanders. Troy Dittebrand picked up the Motorstats.com 4 Cylinder Bomber Division as Tim George picked up the East Bay Sprints Championship. Scotty Williams picked up the Q Auto & Injury Attorneys Limited Late Model Division and for the first time in East Bay’s history, Father and son won Championships in the same year.

ASA sanctioned racing returns to East Bay Raceway Park next year beginning with the 36th Annual Winternationals beginning on February 2nd thru the 4th with the NeSmith Late Models and the Second Annual World Street Stock Championship. Feb. 9-11 will be the EBRP/UMP Open Wheel Modifeds and the Team USA Mod Lites. Feb. 13-18, the Lucas Oil Late Models make their return. Last year we saw six different winners.
Dec. 10th, 2011 –Four divisions were on hand tonight for the next to last night of the 2011 Season. Gagel’s Open Wheel Modifieds ran a 50 lap feature event for the David Reutimann Foundation.

David held his annual charity auction last night at the Silverado Country Club in Zephyrhills. One of the prizes to bid on was a ride along with David in the 2-seater Late Model. Eric Kovach was the lucky winner and got his ride during intermission. Eric was seen waving to the crowd almost each lap. One lucky fan also was awarded as tickets were sold and over $500 was raised for David’s Foundation. Troy “Sox” Dittebrand was the lucky winner. Dittebrand, the current point leader for the Motorstats.com 4 Cylinder Bombers division.

The first feature of the night went to the Street Stocks. When the green flag waved, Garry Sheffield took the early lead. The first caution came out for Locke Brown as he spun on the backstretch. Jim Baker, Billy Carlbert, Jr. and Tim Gay were right behind Sheffield when the green flag waved again. But on the restart, Baker, Carlbert, Jr and Gay tangled up in turn two, bringing out another caution sending them to the rear of the field. That brought Donnie Reed right on the back bumper of Sheffield. On lap seven Reed took over the top spot and never looked back as he went on to win the feature. Sheffield, Buck Woodhouse, John Kinsey and Thomas Burnside were your top five. Sheffield and Carlbert, Jr. won their heats.

The next feature went to the Outlaw 4’s. Shirlene Hammond and Jesse Brown made up the front row. Hammond took the early lead, but on lap two, the first caution came out as John Yates spun in turn two. On lap six, Billy Howard and Hammond were side by side at the line and Howard took over the lead the following lap. Caution once again came out which put Hammond right on the back bumper of Howard with Nick Hebrank right behind Hammond. Green once again waved as Hammond hounded Howard and retook the lead on lap nine and never looked back. Hammond picked up her third win of the season. Hebrank finished second with Howard third. Stephen Hohlbaugh and John Yates rounded out your top five. Howard and Hammond won their heats.

Next up was the David Reutimann Foundation 50 for the Gagel’s Open Wheel Modifieds. Rich Pratt, Austin Sanders and David Reutimann won the heat races. On the front row were team cars, Kyle Bronson on the pole with Wayne Hammond on the outside. When the green flag dropped, Kyle Peterson and Dale Kelley tangled in turn three ruining their nights early on. On the restart, Bronson took the early lead with Devin Dixon right on his back bumper. On lap ten, Dixon charged into turn three trying to take the lead, but it was Bronson with the slide job taking the lead back. Several cautions came out thru out the race. On lap twenty seven, Roger Crouse and Buzzie Reutimann tangled in turn two sending Reutimann to the pits but he was able to return and remain on the lead lap. On lap thirty seven, Buzzie appeared to jump the cushion with Crouse trying to avoid but ended up in the wall, ending his night. On lap forty, Travis Varnadore and Bobby Dixon tangled on the front stretch with Dixon almost turning over, but was able to keep rubber side down. Dixon’s car had too much damage and was not able to continue. Once again on lap forty three, it was Dixon diving to the inside in turn three trying to the take lead from Bronson, but was not able to make the move stick. When the checkered flag dropped, it was Kyle Bronson in Victory Lane. Wayne Hammond finished second, David Reutimann third, with Rich Pratt fourth and Dixon fifth. But after tech was done, it was Bronson dq’d for being to light handing over the win to Wayne Hammond. So the top five then became, David second, Pratt third, Dixon fourth and after starting in the rear and going off the track at one point was Buzzie Reutimann finishing fifth.

The final event of the evening went to the Motorstats.com 4 Cylinder Bombers. Steve Hadding and Troy Dittebrand made up the front row. Dittebrand took the early lead and had the rest of the field chasing him. First caution came out for Hadding spinning on the front stretch. On the restart, Dittebrand took command once again with Patrick Fiore right on his back bumper. Several more cautions came out and brought Fiore back behind Dittebrand. Dittebrand was able to hold off Fiore until lap thirteen when Fiore took the top spot and went on to win the feature. Johnnie Alexander finished second with Dittebrand third. Kayla Jones fourth and Richard Humfeld fifth. But after the race was over, the claim rule was put into affect as Robert Kissam went to buy the 88x, but was refused to sell. So that handed the win over to Johnnie Alexander. Dittebrand now finished second with Jones third, Humfeld fourth and Don R. Quinn moved into the top five.

Dec. 3rd, 2011 –Jonathan Davenport set fast time at 15.758 on Friday night. Heat races were run on Friday night to determine the top 18 to be locked in the A Main for tonight. But before the 100 lap $10,000 to win, other classes were on hand.

Before the feature events two B-Mains were run and the top two from each of them went on to the A-Main. The first B-Main went to Chip Brindle picking up the win with Mark Banal finishing second. Both advanced to the A-Main. The second B-Main went to Tim McCreadie with the win and Jeff Smith finishing second.
The first feature of the night went to the Old Time Mods with Lars Amundsen picking up the feature win with Roger Herbach, Jamie Frankland, Dan Darnell and Gary Riccio rounding out the top five. The Daytona Area Antique Racing Association were also on hand for the feature events as well.

It was now time for the NeSmith Late Model 100 Lap Feature event. Drivers were given an out of car introduction to the fans. On the front row was Mark Whitener and Devin Dixon. When the green flag dropped, Dixon jumped out in front and led the first twenty six laps. But a lap car came between Dixon and a hard charging Jonathan Davenport. Davenport took the advantage and took over the top spot with Dixon hot on his bumper. On lap forty, last years winner Doug Horton’s engine expired bringing out the second caution. The race resumed, but the very next lap, Doug Watson got tangled with another car and rode turn one’s wall and rolled over bringing out the red flag. On lap sixty one, caution once again came out, but it was for Shan Smith and Jeff Mathews getting tangled up in turn two. Several more cautions came out during the race bringing Dixon once again on the back bumper of Davenport. Dennis Franklin was doing everything he could to get by second place Dixon and eventually made his way past Dixon. Caution came out with just eight laps to go and Ivadent Lloyd, Jr. came to a rest in turn one. So with just eight laps left, teammates were first and second. Davenport finishing first and Franklin second with Dixon hot on their trail. When the checkered flag dropped, it was Jonathan Davenport picking up the big paycheck of $10,000 to win for the 7th Annual World Championship. Franklin finished second with Dixon third. Mark Whitener finished fourth and Brandon Overton rounded out the top five. Davenport, also know as Superman, stated in Victory Lane that the car had a miss in it for the first ten laps and eventually worked its way out. He also thanked Hendrick Motorsports for the engines and Barry Wright Race Cars as he was driving one of their cars. Also in Victory Lane the 2011 Rookie of the Year went to Chase Edge and also the 2011 NeSmith Points Champion went to Dan Brewer. He thanked his family for making the trip down to watch him race.

Next up was the Motorstats.com 4 Cylinder Bombers as they ran their fifteen lap feature event. Starting on the front row was the defending Champion Kever Raulerson and Eddie Summit. When the green flag dropped, points leader Troy Dittebrand, who started in the fourth position, picked up the early lead and never looked back. A scary moment for Kayla Jones when she got tangled with two other cars on lap fourteen and rolled over at least two times bringing out the red flag. Jones was okay but the car appeared to have heavy damage to it. That made it a one lap dash to the finish as Johnnie Alexander had one chance to get by Dittebrand. Dittebrand held on and went on to win the feature extending his lead over second in points, Patrick Fiore. Fiore went to the infield early on and dimmed his chances of catching Dittebrand. Alexander picked up second while Mike Meadows, Brett Calonge and Don R. Quinn rounded out the top five.

The final event of the evening went to the Dirt Daubers. After stating in Victory Lane last night after winning the Street Stock feature, Tim Gay kept his word and rode with D. B. Hogwaller for the feature. When the green flag dropped, Hogwaller took the early lead and led most of the race, but spun in turn two handing the lead over to the defending Champion, Brett Phillips. Phillips went on to win picking up his fifth feature of the season. Bill Dixon, Hogwaller, Bill Bolle and Henry Wylee rounded out the top five.

ASA sanctioned racing returns to East Bay Raceway Park next week, December 10, 2011 as the Gagel’s Open Wheel Modifieds run the David Reutimann Foundation 50. David Reutimann and his father Buzzie will be racing each other for bragging rights and a host of others, to try and capture the win. Along with them will be the Street Stocks, Motorstats.com 4 Cylinder Bombers, and the Outlaw 4’s. The racing begins at 6:30 p.m. tomorrow night.
