Danny Martin, Jr. Wins Bob Long Memorial Top Gun Sprints/East Bay Sprint Combo
September 1, 2012– Tampa, FL – The Top Gun Sprints and the East Bay Sprints ran a combined show tonight sponsored by Boomtrux.com and was also the Bob Long Memorial. Along with them were the Daytona Antique Auto Racing Association, the Late Models and the Motorstats.com 4 Cylinder Bombers.
First up were the Daytona Antique Auto Racing Assoc. features. Winning the Midgets feature was Will Rynd. The 6 cylinder feature was Steve Parrish. Former East Bay Street Stock Champion Donnie Reed won the V8 Stock feature and Roger Herbach won the Sprint Feature.
Next was the Late Model Feature. Winning heat races were Hayden Campbell, Wallace Peacock and Roger Crouse. Starting on the front row for the feature was defending Champion Bryan Bernhardt and Josh Peacock. Bernhardt took the early lead with Peacock right behind him. First caution came out as two cars tangled in turn two. On the restart, both Josh and Wallace Peacock both tangled in turn two and other cars came together trying to avoid them. So on the restart, Bernhardt tried to pull away from Crouse, but was unable to as Crouse took over the lead on lap eight. The very next lap, James Hill, Jr. spun in turn four almost collecting the leaders. As the race restarted, Dave Schmauss was making his way to the front after starting in the eleventh position. When the checkered flag dropped, it was Crouse picking up his second feature win of the year. Finishing in the top five were Schmauss, Mavrick Varnadore, Hayden Campbell and Frankie Erskine, Jr. fifth.
Next up was the Sprints for the Bob Long Memorial also sponsored by Boomtrux.com. Winning heat races were Shawn Murray, Robbie Smith, Shane Kriedler and Stephen Darvalics. Waving the green flag for the start of the race was Bob’s oldest daughter Elaine Sanders. On the front row was Stephen Darvalics and Sport Allen. Allen took the early lead with Darvalics and Danny Martin, Jr. as they weaved thru lap traffic. The first caution came out as Martin, Jr. and Allen getting together with Allen coming to rest. That would put Martin, Jr. in the lead with Tyler Godwin moving to second and Darvalics third. On lap seventeen, the red flag came out as Tim Grubaugh flipped on the backstretch. Grubaugh was able to walk away. With just three laps to go, Jason Webster spins bringing out the final caution of the night. Danny Martin, Jr. was able to hold Godwin as they swapped positions a few times on the final laps. Darvalics was third with Smith and Gene Lasker rounded out the top five.
The final feature event of the night went to the Motorstats.com 4 Cylinder Bombers. Winning heats early on were George Handy and Michael Hart. For the front of the feature it was Jeremy Douglas and Brett Calonge. Troy Dittebrand took the early lead after Douglas had spun in two. Points leader Humfeld had troubles under a caution and ended his night as he went into the pits. Dittebrand was able to hold off George Handy for the win. John Moore picked up third while Hart and Patrick Fiore, Sr. rounded out the top five.
