Phillip Cobb Wins Donnie Tanner Memorial Race For Late Models At East Bay Raceway Park
June 2, 2012 – Tampa, FL – Race #2 for the Donnie Tanner Late Model Series was racing tonight. Along with them were the Street Stocks, Motorstats.com 4 Cylinder Bombers and Fan Participation.

The first feature of the night went to the Street Stocks. Dorsey Strickland and Donnie Reed won their heat races. For the feature it was Reed and Strickland on the front row. When the green flag waved, Strickland was the early leader. On lap four, the caution came out for Mark Pickelsimer when the rear end broke in turn one. On the restart, Strickland was still in control until lap six when the defending Champion Jeff Rodgers took over the lead with Tim Gay right on his back bumper trying to take over the top spot. Several more cautions came out before the final restart on lap nine with Rodgers, Gay and Strickland the top three. Rodgers took the checkered flag with Gay, Strickland, Eric Moon and Matthew Grissom rounding out the top five.

Next up was the Late Model Feature Event. Steve Mathis, Jr., Phillip Cobb and Kenny Monahan won their heat races. For the 50 lap Feature Event, it was John Koller and Wallace Peacock making up the front row. When the green waved, Koller took the early lead until lap three when several cars got together in turn one. On the next restart, Koller was in control until the next lap. Wallace took over the top spot. Several more cautions came out, but Peacock was able to keep the field behind him. By lap twenty five, Peacock was getting pressure from Phillip Cobb. Cobb was able to finally able to pass Peacock with Dave Schmauss right behind Cobb taking over second from Peacock pushing him back to third on lap thirty one. Lap thirty three caution flew once again for Adam Boyd slowing on the backstretch. It was still Cobb, Schmauss and Peacock the top three. On lap forty three, Cobb and Schmauss came upon lap traffic. Cobb and Schmauss weaved their way through without any problems. With just two laps to go, Mathis, Jr. hit the wall in turn two making it a two lap dash to the finish. Cobb was looking to pick up his third feature win and Schmauss his first of the year. When the final green flag waved, Cobb was able to hold off a hard charging Schmauss for the win. Schmauss was second with Peacock, Kenny Monahan and Kyle Musselman rounding out your top five.

The final feature event went to the Motorstats.com 4 Cylinder Bombers. Richard Humfeld and Brett Calonge won their heat races. For the feature it was Robert Kissam and the defending Champion, Troy Dittebrand on the front row. On the start, cars were three wide for the first part of lap one until they crossed the start finish line with Kissam the leader and Dittebrand and Kayla Jones right behind him. On lap ten, Kissam and Dittebrand were side by side at the line battling for the lead. Dittebrand was able to take over the top spot on lap twelve and went on to win the feature. Kissam was second with Kayla Jones, George Handy and Jason Burnside rounding out the top five.
